Good Bones

Mina and the Two Chicks team went to work on renovations for her brother, Tad, and sister, Kelsy. The episode featured our Grey Riven Slate design from the Knight Tile collection, with the individual pieces set off by concrete-colored design strips. The design strips (DS12) are narrow pieces of luxury vinyl that replicate grout – but unlike grout, they’re nonporous, so they won’t stain or harbor bacteria, and they don’t need to be sealed. 

The plan was to take on a new build consisting of a duplex and carriage house. But sometimes plans change – like when there are issues with the foundation of the duplex. So Mina shifted focus exclusively to the carriage house, with the idea of earning rental income ASAP. She chose two premium luxury vinyl designs from our Korlok Select collection – Warm Ash for a straight lay and Texas White Ash in 24” x 6” herringbone planks.

New construction can feel a little bland, but Mina added some serious character to this home, using a honey maple-colored luxury vinyl in herringbone. With patterns printed directly on individual pieces or flooring that’s pre-cut to be laid in chevron or herringbone, you can create a striking look without the disruption of a long, drawn-out installation. Major challenges with framing created major issues for the budget … but when it was all said and done, Mina and her team successfully completed a breathtaking transformation. The renovation included our elegant Smoked American Maple design, a high-contrast look with plenty on knots and sap marks. Mina definitely had her work cut out with this project. Along with preserving the integrity of a historic Indianapolis home, she had to overcome regulatory issues with the city. But all’s well that ends well, as she used our premium luxury vinyl to transform the home into an eclectic mid-mod villa. Dark, warm colorways like this one represent a key design trend – flooring that creates a cozy, welcoming vibe.

Mina and her team renovated a home that had been keeping a secret – a secret room, that is. In the process, she used our Lemon Spotted Gum luxury vinyl, creating an eye-catching basketweave pattern in the kitchen. Lemon Spotted Gum is a Karndean LooseLay product, which combines the best features of gluedown flooring (it can be cut and laid in custom patterns) and floating flooring (easy to install, because it doesn’t require full-spread adhesive). 

Mina and her team revamped a junk-filled duplex, transforming the attic into a rental unit with bedrooms, a kitchen and living room. The project included some creative design with one of our wood-inspired designs, which she cut and positioned to create a distinctive French basketweave pattern.
